Direct answer

Understand why nursing licenses are generally not transferred from one state to another and when endorsement, compact privilege or a new application is required.

Use the responsible official system

This website does not issue licenses, determine eligibility, accept regulatory payments or receive confidential application documents.

A license usually does not move

Each jurisdiction issues its own authority. An endorsement application asks the destination board to evaluate an applicant already licensed elsewhere. The original license normally remains subject to its own renewal and status rules.

Compact privilege is different

An eligible nurse whose primary state of residence is a compact jurisdiction may hold a multistate RN or LPN/VN license. Moving the primary residence can trigger a requirement to apply in the new home state. APRN authority generally requires separate jurisdiction-specific review.

Endorsement checklist

Identify the destination authority, choose the correct credential, submit the destination application, arrange license verification, complete fingerprints or background checks, provide education or examination records when requested, monitor the official account and verify issuance before practice.

Avoid duplicate or wrong applications

Do not assume a nearby state has the same board structure, fee, CE rule or portal. California, Louisiana, West Virginia and other jurisdictions can split responsibilities. Use the destination credential—not only the state name—to choose the authority.

Find the jurisdiction-specific route

Use the jurisdiction directory or the license action router to open source-reviewed lookup, renewal, continuing-education and endorsement instructions.
